Man sentenced for popping Champagne
A former Navy marksman convicted of killing an 18-year-old man he perceived as a gang rival was sentenced Thursday to 84 years to life in state prison for the car-to-car shooting.

Lawrence Christopher Smith, 25, was convicted March 30 of first-degree murder in the Nov. 26, 2004, death of Dom Perignon Champagne in southeast San Diego.

A jury also found Smith guilty of attempted murder for pumping three shots into a cocaine dealer who owed him $80 on Sept. 12, 2004, and possession of marijuana for sale.

Jurors deadlocked on murder charges against Jimmy Lopez, Smith's then-16-year-old passenger at the time of Champagne was shot.

Lopez, now 18, pleaded guilty last week to shooting into an occupied vehicle and gang allegations and faces up to eight years in prison when he is sentenced July 13.

Deputy District Attorney Michael Runyon told the jury that it could have been either Smith or Lopez who fired the fatal shots that killed the victim.

Some witnesses identified Smith as the man who drove alongside the victim's vehicle near 47th Street and Ocean View Boulevard at 3:30 p.m. and opened fire, the prosecutor said.

Other witnesses told police that Lopez, the front passenger in Smith's car, was the shooter, Runyon said.

After the verdicts, jurors said they believed Smith shot across Lopez and killed Champagne, the prosecutor said.

Teen loads gun, shoots when intruder breaks down door
With a man breaking through the front door, a Hollywood Florida 15-year-old loaded his father's gun, waited for the intruder to come in and shot him, police said.

Keil Jumper, 22, who police said has a long rap sheet, was later found bleeding in an area between two houses. Police said Jumper was seriously injured but his injuries didn't appear life threatening.

The incident happened about 3:30 a.m. Saturday, when Jumper attempted to break down the front door, then picked up a bicycle to smash the window, police said. The sounds terrified a family of eight to 10 people who were asleep in the home, which is on South 61st Avenue in Hollywood, police said.

Police said the teenager is unlikely to be charged in the case. But they said Jumper, who was shot several times, will be -- once he's discharged from Memorial Regional Hospital in Hollywood.

Woman Accused of Writing Fake Tickets
A New York City traffic agent has been charged with writing dozens of fraudulent parking tickets sometimes while sitting in her car miles away from the bogus violations she cited, prosecutors said Tuesday.

Nivea Cloud was accused of writing 27 tickets in three hours in seven locations on May 12, inventing infractions just one to four minutes apart in the same place, Queens District Attorney Richard Brown said.

She was seen sitting in her police car, parked in a handicapped spot, more than a mile away from where the vehicles cited on her tickets supposedly were illegally parked, Brown said.

"As a municipal worker entrusted with such enormous financial powers over motorists and a duty and responsibility to uphold the law, the defendant's alleged conduct is outrageous," Brown said in a news release announcing the charges.

Cloud, 30, was arraigned Tuesday on charges including official misconduct and falsifying business records. She could face up to four years in prison if convicted.

Dutch policewomen complain about new 'see-through' uniform
The Dutch police union has received dozens of official complaints from policewomen about their new uniform blouse which they say is see-through.

The officers feel "uneasy" and "closely watched" while wearing the new garment, police union chairman Hans van Duijn told Monday's edition of the Algemeen Dagblad newspaper.

"Even a white bra shows through the fabric," he explained.

The police union has already received 20 official complaints although distribution of the new uniform has only just started.

Van Duijn suggested that police start issuing official undershirts to tackle the see-through problem.

This is not the first time the new blouse has sparked complaints. Earlier gold buttons on the breast pockets were replaced by more subdued white buttons because female officers complained the flashy gold drew too much attention to their chest.

Woman 'chomped' at officer's groin
BRACE yourself boys: you will cringe.

Austrailian Police Constable Anthony Jennings certainly did when he felt a "crushing sensation" in the groin.

"Excruciating pain" were the words he used to describe the moment Maria Klaus allegedly "chomped" on his penis after a domestic violence incident in Maroochydore a year ago.

The softly spoken Const Jennings, 43, had to share possibly his worst day on the job in the Maroochydore District Court in front a jury and the woman accused of seriously assaulting him twice.

Const Jennings and Constable Leonie Scott were called to Ms Klaus' unit in Beach Parade at 5:30pm on June 12.

The pair testified that Kevin Hughes was waiting at the door of the unit and had invited them in to speak "to her".

Const Jennings said the 38-year-old Klaus appeared, wet and wrapped in a towel, and started yelling.

He said she pushed Mr Hughes hard in the chest with two hands, and twice threw a three-year-old child by one arm behind her.

Const Jennings said the first assault ensued when he placed his hand on Ms Klaus' left arm and told her he was detaining her under the Domestic and Family Violence Act.

He said he had trouble gripping Ms Klaus because she was naked and wet and the pair ended up on the ground.

"It was a flurry of head-butts, bites, kneeing me and punching," he said.

"There was ... gnashing of teeth. As her face was coming towards me she was snapping her teeth, chomping.

"I actually felt her nose go into my mouth. When I was on the ground I felt my face, it was covered in saliva and there was blood."

Const Jennings said he had to break his tie to release Ms Klaus' grip, whereupon she kicked him in the chest and shoulder with her feet.

"She was yelling at me that she was going to get my balls," he said.

"Even though she was small ... she was quite muscular and powerful."

Back-up arrived after the pair eventually got handcuffs on Ms Klaus to help escort her downstairs to a van.

Const Jennings said his attention was only diverted for a few seconds when he felt "a sudden crushing pain".

"I felt an excruciating pain at the end of my penis ... I looked down and her head was over the top of my groin and she was biting me," he said.

"I was in a lot of pain, shock and I screamed."

Barrister Steve Courtney suggested police were not invited into the unit, Const Jennings did not understand his detaining powers under the domestic violence legislation and Ms Klaus did not bite the policeman's penis.

But Constable Leonie Scott backed up his claims when she took the stand.

The trial continues today.

Pinellas County, Florida deputies say a man eating a bowl of cereal while driving accidently hit the back of a deputy's vehicle last Friday in Seminole.

Lance Kocses faces charges for failing to yield the right of way. Accident investigators say Kocses was eating a bowl of Frosted Flakes and was distracted.

Deputies say Kocses was northbound on Seminole Boulevard near 117th Drive in his Toyota Tacoma when he hit the deputy.

Deputy Nick Lazaris, who was in his cruiser at the time, was not injured. Damages to both vehicles will probably reach $5000.

Armed Citizen of the Week
Police in Wilkes-Barre, PA said Richard Wayne Mills, 47, was shot in the leg by a woman he tried to rob. Minutes later, he was arrested on charges of aggravated assault, terroristic threats, robbery and other charges.

According to police:

Mills entered 264 Rear High St. just before 7 p.m. with a crowbar. Once through the door, he grabbed a samurai sword off the wall and tried to rob two men and a woman inside the house.

Amid the ensuing chaos, someone called 911 and the two men fled the residence.

When Mills tried to rob the woman, she pulled out a gun and shot Mills in the leg. Then she ran out of the house.

Detective Ron Foy said the woman, who police have not been able to locate since the shooting, had a permit to carry the weapon.

The names of the two men have also not been released.

Foy said Mills has a criminal rap sheet “as long as your sleeve,” and called the shooting “the perfect irony.”

Mills has said he served time in prison for armed robbery, writing bad checks and many drug and alcohol-related charges.

In November, he was charged with withholding information on the whereabouts of Sean Thomas Quinn, a man with an extensive history of drug crimes, theft and burglary, who was wanted in connection with a Nov. 8 burglary at a pizza restaurant in Old Forge.

Quinn was placed in a police cruiser that night but because of a missing pinky finger on his right hand he was able to slip out of the handcuffs and escape. He sped away in a police cruiser with police in pursuit.

Quinn managed to avoid capture even after roughly 100 officers launched a massive search for him in the days after his escape.

He was arrested in Kingston Township Nov. 23 after eluding investigators for two weeks. Police captured him outside a township bar as he was riding a bicycle.
